10" NLF cartridge, 2 stages, 50 g KDF® + granular activated carbon

Filter cartridge in the 10" format, NLF version, combining two media in a single body: a bed of 50 grams of KDF® and a bed of granular activated carbon (GAC).

Two complementary media

KDF® is a high-purity copper-zinc alloy that works by redox reaction, not by adsorption. It neutralises free chlorine, reduces dissolved heavy metals, and, its most practical benefit, limits bacterial growth inside the cartridge.

That is precisely the weakness of a carbon-only cartridge: its damp bed, rich in captured organic matter, gets colonised between periods of use. The 50 g of KDF® placed upstream tackles the problem at source.

The granular activated carbon then handles residual chlorine, taste, odour and organic compounds. Its open structure gives a low pressure drop, which matters on an installation that already has several stages.

The result of the combination: neutral-tasting water, and a media bed that ages better than carbon alone.

The stated weight

50 g of KDF®, a figure worth looking at closely when buying. On this type of mixed cartridge, the actual quantity of redox media varies widely between manufacturers, and many do not state it at all. A token dose of KDF® in a body largely filled with carbon does not deliver the intended effect: the stated weight is what allows two competing references to be compared objectively.

KDF® is a registered trademark of KDF Fluid Treatment. It is not treated carbon or a generic media, but a copper-zinc alloy whose performance is documented by the manufacturer.

Where to install it

As a second stage, behind a sediment cartridge that protects it from fouling. As pre-treatment ahead of an RO system, where it protects the membrane from chlorine, polyamide is destroyed irreversibly by free chlorine.

Also at the point of use on town water, in hospitality, and on circuits feeding coffee and ice machines.

Replacement

Flush a new cartridge for a few minutes before commissioning to clear the carbon fines.

Replace it as soon as a chlorine taste returns, if pressure drop rises, or every 6 months at the latest. Saturated carbon does not simply stop filtering: it releases what it has captured.
