10" woven PP fibre cartridge - 10 microns

Sediment filtration cartridge in woven polypropylene fibre, length 10", filtration threshold 10 microns. Certified NSF. Aquapro reference PR-PPS-10-10.

This is the most universal format and threshold in the range, covering the widest range of configurations without special adjustment.

Woven fibre

The media is polypropylene thread wound in crossed layers around a central core. Winding tension and pitch are calculated so that density increases towards the inside: mesh is wide at the surface and tightens in depth.

Water therefore undergoes progressive filtration. Large particles are stopped in the outer layers, finer ones penetrate further before being retained.

The result is depth filtration: the cartridge exploits its entire volume instead of clogging only on its external face. Compared to a surface media, it offers higher retention capacity and longer service life at equivalent threshold.

Polypropylene is chemically inert and tolerates a wide pH range. It releases nothing into the water, which NSF certification confirms in terms of materials in contact with drinking water.

Why 10 microns

10 microns is the intermediate threshold in the range, between 20-25 µm for coarse filtration and 5 µm or 1 µm for fine filtration.

It is the most common compromise in general pre-filtration, and this is no accident. Fine enough to retain sand, rust, clay particles and pipe deposits that make up the bulk of the problem. Open enough to avoid clogging within weeks on heavily loaded water.

On moderately loaded mains water, it is often the only threshold needed before the equipment to be protected. On more difficult water, it finds its place as a second stage behind a 20 or 25 µm cartridge.

This is the reference to propose when water behaviour is not yet known: it allows observation of clogging rate and subsequent adjustment, up or down.

Where to use it

In water softener protection. Sediments foul the resin bed and degrade regeneration efficiency, with progressive capacity loss that goes unnoticed.

In reverse osmosis pre-filtration, where it lightens the load on subsequent stages and directly extends membrane life.

On borehole and well installations, downstream of a coarser pre-filter.

And in general protection of water heaters, pumps and fittings, where sand and rust damage seating surfaces and mechanisms.

Replacement

Replacement is judged by pressure drop, not by calendar. A noticeable drop in flow rate, or an upstream/downstream pressure differential that rises, signals a saturated cartridge.

In practice, expect 3 to 6 months depending on water quality.

A cartridge left in place too long does more than restrict system flow: under pressure, it may release some of the particles it had retained.

Installation

Cut off water and depressurise before opening the filter housing. Respect the direction of flow.

On reassembly, grease the O-ring of the bowl with food-grade silicone grease and check that it is clean, properly seated in its groove and not twisted. This is the leading cause of leaks on a filter housing.
