20" string wound PP cartridge - 10 micron

Sediment filter cartridge in wound polypropylene fibre, 20" long, 10 micron rating. NSF certified. Aquapro reference PR-PPS-20-10.

The 20" format doubles the filtration area of a standard 10" cartridge. In practice this means more flow at the same pressure drop and a longer service life between replacements, two arguments that count on heavily used installations.

Wound fibre

The media is a polypropylene yarn wound in crossed layers around a central core. This winding creates a structure whose density increases inwards: the mesh is open at the surface and tightens with depth.

Water therefore passes through progressive filtration. Coarse particles are stopped in the outer layers, finer ones travel further before being retained. The result is depth filtration: the cartridge uses its full volume instead of blinding on its outer face alone.

Polypropylene is chemically inert and tolerates a wide pH range. It releases nothing into the water, which the NSF certification confirms in terms of materials in contact with drinking water.

Why 10 micron

10 micron is the intermediate rating in the range, between 20-25 µm for coarse duty and 5 µm or 1 µm for polishing.

It is the most common compromise in general prefiltration: fine enough to capture sand, rust, clay particles and pipe deposits, open enough not to blind within weeks on loaded water. On moderately loaded mains water it is often the only rating needed ahead of the equipment being protected.

Where to use it

As softener protection, sediment fouls the resin bed and degrades regeneration efficiency. As RO prefiltration, where it lightens the load on the following stages. On well or borehole installations, downstream of a coarser prefilter. And as general protection for water heaters, pumps and tapware.

Replacement

Replacement is judged on pressure drop, not on the calendar. A noticeable drop in flow or a rising differential pressure across the filter signals a saturated cartridge. In practice, count on 3 to 6 months depending on water quality.

A cartridge left in place too long does more than throttle flow: under pressure it can release part of the particles it had captured.
