Why meter water

Metering water means controlling it: metering and sub-metering allow you to track consumption by point of use, fairly distribute charges between occupants or workshops, detect leaks by comparing readings and bill based on actual consumption. A reliable meter with pulse output integrates into building management systems (BMS) or remote reading systems for automated monitoring without on-site visits.

Principle

This Woltmann meter with axial propeller is designed for high flow rates and large diameters (DN50 to DN300). It measures cold or hot water consumption on industrial and collective networks, with low pressure drop and pulse output for remote reading.

Operation

The Woltmann propeller, positioned in the flow axis, rotates proportionally to the flow rate and drives a dry dial totaliser via magnetic transmission. This principle offers high flow capacity and low pressure drop on large diameters. Typical ratio R=50; body in cast iron or brass depending on size, flange connection.

Reliability & anti-fraud

The reliability of a water meter depends on its design: dry dial isolated from water, magnetic transmission between the turbine and totaliser (which also protects against magnet fraud), hermetically sealed totaliser to remain readable over time, and brass body with epoxy coating or cast iron resistant to corrosion. These choices guarantee stable measurement and high longevity, even with slightly contaminated water.

Remote reading & control

Combined with pulse output, remote reading transforms metering into a management tool: readings are automatically sent to a management system or software, without manual collection. You can visualise consumption by point of use, distribute charges, identify overconsumption or leaks as soon as abnormal flow persists at night, and trigger alerts. This is the basis for water conservation and cost control.

Choosing the right meter

Meter selection is based on the flow rate to be measured and the pipe diameter (DN), temperature (cold or hot water), and measurement range (ratio R). Single-jet meters are suitable for small domestic diameters, multi-jet meters offer better accuracy at low flow, Woltmann meters handle high flow rates with low pressure drop, and combination meters cover a very wide range. DIMM helps you size according to your installation.

Pulse output

Pulse output converts a volume of water into electrical signals: each pulse corresponds to a predefined volume (pulse value, adjustable among several values). Connected to a data logger, controller or BMS, it enables remote reading, leak alarm, distribution and proportional control by volume. Depending on the model, two outputs (identical or different) and flow direction are available.

Installation & maintenance

Installation is on a full pipe, in the direction of the arrow, preferably horizontal to preserve accuracy (maximum ratio). Respect the recommended upstream/downstream straight lengths and install a filter upstream to protect the mechanism. Isolation valves facilitate removal. Maintenance is minimal: periodic inspection and replacement at end of metrological life.
