Straight adapter 1/4" tube × 3/8" NPTF

Straight fitting connecting 1/4" semi-rigid tubing to a 3/8" NPTF female port. On the tube side, a push-fit connection: the tube is pushed fully home, the collet locks it and the O-ring seals it. On the thread side, a 3/8" NPTF male.

A reducer in a single part

The fitting also acts as a 1/4" → 3/8" reducer.

This is a very common case: the line runs in 1/4" tubing, the standard size for RO systems and drinking water circuits, but the equipment to connect has a 3/8" threaded port, a frequent size on valves, pump bodies, filter heads and membrane housings.

Without this fitting you would need a 3/8" → 1/4" threaded adapter plus a 1/4" quick-connect. Here, one part bridges the gap: one connection fewer, therefore one potential leak point fewer, and a more compact assembly.

The NPTF thread

NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel, known as Dryseal) is a tapered thread to the American standard. It seals on the threads themselves: the taper wedges into the port and the deformation of the thread flanks creates the contact.

Two practical consequences.

Sealant is always required, PTFE tape or pipe sealant, applied in the direction of tightening.

And do not overtighten: on a polymer port the taper acts as a wedge and can split the receiving thread. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn with a spanner is enough in most cases.

Do not confuse with BSP

NPTF is the American standard, BSP the European one. Thread angle and pitch differ, 60° against 55°, and they are not interchangeable.

An NPTF male in a BSP port engages only a few threads and will eventually leak, or strip the threads of the receiving component. The joint seems to hold on tightening, then fails in service: it is the most costly mistake on this family of fittings.

Always check the standard of the receiving port before ordering, not just its diameter.

Where to use it

On reverse osmosis systems, to connect a 1/4" line to a 3/8" port: membrane housings, valves and solenoid valves, pump bodies, filter heads, pressure gauges. And more broadly on any water treatment installation combining 1/4" tubing with 3/8" threaded equipment.

Fitting

Thread side: apply PTFE in the direction of tightening, screw in by hand, finish with a quarter turn.

Tube side: cut square with a tube cutter, an angled cut, or one crushed with pliers, stops the O-ring bearing evenly. Push in until it bottoms out, then pull lightly to check engagement. To disconnect: shut off the water, depressurise, push the collet towards the fitting body and pull the tube out.

Finally, check that the tube really is 1/4" imperial (6,35 mm) and not 6 mm metric: the two diameters are close but not interchangeable.
