Jaco 40-4-4 elbow, 1/4" tube x 1/4" thread

90° angle fitting combining two connection methods:

• tube side: 1/4" compression connection via nut, ferrule and insert
• thread side: 1/4" male thread with o-ring seated at bottom, sealing by face contact

O-ring sealing

The o-ring compresses on the flat bearing surface at the bottom of the thread. This face contact provides the seal, not the thread itself.

Installation consequences:

• tighten until o-ring contact, then one quarter turn, without forcing
• do not add PTFE tape or paste, which prevent the o-ring from seating correctly
• check o-ring presence and condition at each reassembly
• do not over-tighten: the body deforms and the o-ring crushes

The fitting can be disconnected and reconnected without re-sealing, which distinguishes it from a tapered thread.

Compression connection on tube side

The tube side operates with a nut, ferrule and insert. Tightening the nut compresses the ferrule onto the tube; the insert placed inside prevents crushing.

This is not an instant push-fit connection: there is no release collar, and the tube cannot be withdrawn by simple push.

Key point: the ferrule deforms permanently on first tightening. A tube disconnected and reconnected with the old ferrule often leaks. Plan for spare insert and ferrule sets when servicing.

The 90° elbow

The elbow avoids bending the tube at a tight angle. A 1/4" tube pinched at the outlet of a fitting sees its cross-section reduced and its wall fatigued.

When installed under sink, in a cabinet or behind equipment, the elbow saves the space that a proper bend radius would require.

Applications

Reverse osmosis units, under-sink filtration, filter housing outlets, point-of-use tap supplies, reservoir valves, water fountains and ice machines. Cold sanitary water.

Installation

Tube side: cut square with tube cutter, slip on nut then ferrule, insert the insert into the tube, push fully into the fitting and tighten moderately.

Thread side: check o-ring presence, screw until contact then tighten one quarter turn with key on the flats.

Pressurise gradually and check for weeping before closing the casing.

Good to know

Imperial 1/4" and metric 6 mm are not interchangeable.

On an installation fitted with push-fit quick couplings, this elbow is not interchangeable with an instant coupling: the tube-side connection technologies differ.
