Overview

Air vent Fleck to be mounted on a filter bottle. It automatically evacuates air that accumulates at the top of the bottle and keeps the filter media fully submerged. It is a key accessory for air oxidation filters, used to treat well or borehole water containing iron or manganese.

Operating principle

In an oxidation filter, air is injected into the water to oxidise dissolved iron and manganese, which the media then retains. Excess air rises and forms a pocket at the top of the bottle. The vent opens in the presence of air and closes when water rises: the pocket is evacuated without water loss during normal operation. It also serves to purge air trapped during commissioning or after draining.

Why vent air

An air pocket reduces the volume of media actually in contact with water and disrupts flow distribution. It also interferes with backwashing. Air entering the network causes water hammer and taps that spit. The vent eliminates these problems and stabilises filter operation.

Installation

The vent is mounted on the upper part of the bottle. Its angled outlet is connected to a discharge pipe, directed to the drain or to a suitable discharge point. Install in a frost-protected location and keep access clear for inspection and maintenance.

Maintenance

On water with high iron content, deposits may form over time. Regular inspection of proper operation, particularly discharge, ensures the vent's effectiveness over time.

Media is selected according to water analysis: carbon for taste and chlorine, calcite/Corosex to raise aggressive pH, Ecomix for multi-problem well water. Plan for backwashing (sufficient flow and discharge) and, for pH correction media, regular inspection and refilling of the level as they are consumed. An upstream sediment pre-filter protects the media and spaces out washings, whilst regular water analysis allows you to adjust the valve setting.
