Overview

Iron removal filter on Pyrolusite media Clack (ref. CLACK-WS1TC-PYROLUSITE-130). 18X65 bottle. WS1 valve. This unit treats well, borehole or mains water laden with iron and/or manganese, which cause ochre deposits, stains on laundry and fittings, and metallic tastes. Supplied ready to install (filled bottle + valve + distribution), it is installed at the entry point to protect the entire system.

Iron removal principle

Pyrolusite is a dense mineral media based on natural manganese dioxide, offering strong oxidising power on iron and manganese. Its high density requires a higher backwash flow rate but provides excellent retention capacity and remarkable longevity, ideal for heavily iron-laden waters.

Pyrolusite media

The bottle is filled with Pyrolusite media on a gravel/flint support bed that distributes water and retains fines. Media volume: 127.5 L. The media regenerates/cleans through backwashing which unclogs the bed and removes retained oxides, restoring filtration capacity for the next cycle.

Valve & operation

The WS1 valve automatically controls cycles: service (filtration), backwash, rinse and return to service. Depending on the model, triggering is time-based or volume-based. An integrated bypass allows the filter to be isolated without cutting off water. Programming adjusts to hardness/iron load and consumption.

Sizing & installation

Choose the size (18X65 bottle) according to peak flow rate and iron/manganese content. Provide a drain connection for backwashing, electrical supply for the valve and, if water lacks oxygen, aeration or air injection upstream. Install in a frost-free location, on level ground, with sediment pre-filter recommended.

Economy & ecology

Treating iron and manganese at source prevents ochre scaling of pipework, stains on laundry and premature failure of appliances: equipment lifespan is extended and cleaning products and replacements are reduced. Backwashing uses only water (and salt for Ecomix), with no polluting additives, for effective treatment that respects the resource.

Choosing correctly

To choose correctly, have your water analysed (iron, manganese, pH, dissolved oxygen, H2S) and estimate peak flow rate. Media is selected according to parameters: BIRM (oxygenated water), Greensand/Pyrolusite (high loads, manganese), Ecomix (multi-parameter + softening). The DIMM team will help you size the bottle, valve and pre-treatment.

DIMM service & support

DIMM designs, assembles and ships turnkey iron removal stations (BIRM, Greensand, Pyrolusite, Ecomix media) on Clack, Fleck and Ecosoft valves, as well as hoses and connection accessories. Our technical teams analyse your water, size the bottle and valve, and advise on appropriate pre-treatment (aeration, pre-filtration). Each reference is identified by its article code for reliable ordering, with manufacturer warranty, spare parts and recharge media available. Whether you are equipping a domestic borehole, agricultural operation or tertiary building, we support you from water analysis to media and valve selection, through to commissioning and ongoing maintenance of your station.

Good to know

Catalytic iron removal (BIRM, Greensand, Pyrolusite) requires regular backwashing and sufficient flow rate: undersizing the bottle degrades effectiveness. Check dissolved oxygen and pH before selecting media. For multi-problem well water (iron + hardness), Ecomix simplifies by treating everything in one salt-regenerated bottle. Also consider a sediment pre-filter upstream, drainage of backwash water and annual media inspection: these three practices preserve effectiveness and extend station lifespan.

Applications

Iron removal applies to well, borehole and spring water laden with iron and/or manganese, in residential, tertiary and agricultural settings. Placed at the entry point, the unit protects the entire house or building: fittings, appliances, softener and reverse osmosis unit downstream. It combines with sediment pre-filtration and, if necessary, aeration to ensure the oxygen required by catalytic media.
