Overview

Iron-removal filter on BIRM media Clack (ref. CLACK-WS1CI-BIRM-30). Vessel 10X54. Valve WS1. This station treats well, borehole or mains water loaded with iron and/or manganese, causing ochre deposits, stains on laundry and taps and metallic taste. Delivered ready to install (filled vessel + valve + distribution), it fits at point of entry to protect the whole installation.

Iron-removal principle

BIRM is a catalytic medium that accelerates the oxidation of dissolved iron and manganese using the oxygen already present in the water. The insoluble oxides formed are retained in the bed and flushed out during backwash. No chemical reagent is consumed: the process simply requires sufficiently oxygenated water and a suitable pH (generally > 6.8).

BIRM media

The vessel is filled with the BIRM medium on a gravel/silex support bed that distributes the water and retains fines. Media volume: 28.3 L. The medium regenerates/cleans by backwash, which declogs the bed and flushes the retained oxides, restoring filtration capacity for the next cycle.

Valve & operation

The WS1 valve automatically drives the cycles: service (filtration), backwash, rinse and return to service. Depending on the model, triggering is timed or metered. A built-in bypass isolates the filter without cutting the water. Programming is set to the hardness/iron load and consumption.

Sizing & installation

Choose the size (vessel 10X54) according to peak flow and iron/manganese content. Provide a drain for backwash, a power supply for the valve and, if the water lacks oxygen, aeration or air injection upstream. Install frost-free, on a flat floor, with a recommended sediment pre-filter.

Savings & ecology

Treating iron and manganese at source prevents ochre scaling of pipes, laundry stains and premature appliance failure: it extends equipment life and cuts cleaning products and replacements. Backwash uses only water (and salt for Ecomix), without polluting additives, for effective, resource-respecting treatment.

Choosing right

To choose well, have your water analysed (iron, manganese, pH, dissolved oxygen, H2S) and estimate peak flow. The medium is chosen by parameters: BIRM (oxygenated water), Greensand/Pyrolusite (high loads, manganese), Ecomix (multi-parameter + softening). The DIMM team helps you size vessel, valve and pre-treatment.

DIMM service & support

DIMM designs, assembles and ships turnkey iron-removal stations (BIRM, Greensand, Pyrolusite, Ecomix) on Clack, Fleck and Ecosoft valves, plus the hoses and connection accessories. Our technical teams analyse your water, size vessel and valve and advise the right pre-treatment (aeration, pre-filtration). Every item is identified by its article code for reliable ordering, with manufacturer's warranty, spare parts and refill media available. Whether you equip a domestic borehole, a farm or a tertiary building, we support you from water analysis to the choice of medium and valve, through to commissioning and maintenance follow-up of your station.

Good to know

Catalytic iron removal (BIRM, Greensand, Pyrolusite) requires regular backwash and sufficient flow: undersizing the vessel degrades efficiency. Check dissolved oxygen and pH before choosing the medium. For multi-problem well water (iron + hardness), Ecomix simplifies by treating everything in a single salt-regenerated vessel. Also consider an upstream sediment pre-filter, drainage for the backwash water and an annual media check: these three habits preserve efficiency and extend the station's life.

Applications

Iron removal applies to well, borehole and spring water loaded with iron and/or manganese, in residential as well as tertiary and agricultural settings. At point of entry, the station protects the whole house or building: taps, appliances, softener and RO downstream. It combines with a sediment pre-filter and, if needed, aeration to ensure the oxygen required by catalytic media.
