Male elbow 3/8" tube × 1/4" NPTF

90° fitting combining a 3/8" push-fit connection on the tube side with a 1/4" NPTF male thread on the threaded side.

On the tube side the principle is standard: the tube pushes fully home, the collet locks it and the O-ring seals it. On the thread side, the fitting screws directly into the equipment port.

Why an elbow rather than a straight fitting

A straight fitting on a piece of equipment forces the tube to leave along the axis of the port. The tube then has to be bent to send it where it needs to go, and semi-rigid tubing only tolerates a limited bend radius.

Forced beyond it, the tube goes oval or kinks: the bore narrows, flow drops, and the tube fatigues then cracks at the bend. The problem is all the more pronounced in 3/8", the diameter used on higher-flow lines.

The elbow solves this at source. It turns the line 90° right at the port, with the full bore preserved. It also allows the tube to be run flat against a wall or cabinet base, where a straight fitting would demand several centimetres of clearance.

In a crowded under-sink cabinet, this is often the only workable arrangement.

The NPTF thread

NPTF (National Pipe Taper Fuel, known as Dryseal) is a tapered thread to the American standard. It seals on the threads themselves: the taper wedges into the port and the deformation of the thread flanks creates the contact.

Two practical consequences. Sealant is always required, PTFE tape or pipe sealant, applied in the direction of tightening. And do not overtighten: on a polymer port the taper acts as a wedge and can split the receiving thread. Hand-tight plus a quarter turn is generally enough.

Watch the standard. NPTF is American, BSP European. Thread angle and pitch differ, 60° against 55°, and they are not interchangeable. An NPTF male in a BSP port engages only a few threads and will eventually leak. Always check the standard of the receiving port before ordering.

The 3/8" → 1/4" step

The fitting also acts as a reducer: it connects a 3/8" tubing run, tank outlet, faucet feed, product line, to a 1/4" threaded port, a common size on valves, gauges and filter heads.

Where to use it

On reverse osmosis systems, pressure tanks, valves and solenoid valves, pump bodies and filtration heads with 1/4" NPTF ports, anywhere the 3/8" line has to change direction right at the equipment outlet.

Fitting

Thread side: apply PTFE in the direction of tightening, screw in by hand, finish with a quarter turn. Orient the elbow correctly before the final tightening, that is the main point of attention on a threaded elbow, since backing it off to re-aim it compromises the seal.

Tube side: cut square with a tube cutter, push fully home, pull lightly to check engagement.

Finally, check that the tube really is 3/8" imperial and not 10 mm metric: the two diameters are close but not interchangeable.
