Adriatica 22 L water softener, Fleck 5600 volumetric mechanical valve

Monobloc water softener: the resin tank and salt container are integrated into a single cabinet. It reduces the hardness of the supply water and thus limits scale formation in the hot water tank, pipework and connected appliances.

Operation

Hard water passes through the ion exchange resin bed, which captures calcium and magnesium and releases sodium in exchange. The water emerges softened.

When the resin is saturated, the valve initiates brine regeneration: backwash, brine draw, rinse and return of water to the salt container. The resin regains its exchange capacity.

The Fleck 5600 volumetric mechanical valve

The Fleck 5600 is the most widespread valve in domestic water treatment. In volumetric mechanical version, the count of water consumed and the triggering of regeneration are ensured by a meter and a gear train, without control electronics.

What this means in practice:

• No electronic card: nothing to reprogram after a power cut, no electronic component to replace
• Visual diagnosis: operation is read from the programmer position, without error codes to interpret
• Spare parts available everywhere and interchangeable for decades
• No screen or display: monitoring is done by mechanical reading, not on a display

This is the choice of robustness and simplicity of maintenance, as opposed to an electronic valve which offers more settings and a display.

Volumetric, not time-based

Regeneration is triggered by the volume of water actually consumed, not at fixed time intervals.

Salt and rinse water consumption therefore follows household usage. A prolonged absence does not trigger unnecessary regeneration, high consumption triggers it when needed.

On a time-based valve, regeneration occurs on schedule, whether necessary or not.

Stainless steel bypass

The bypass allows the appliance to be isolated without cutting off the water supply to the building: essential for commissioning, replacing a part or a prolonged absence.

The stainless steel version resists better over time than plastic bypasses, particularly with repeated operation and in humid technical rooms.

Mixing valve

Proportional blending allows the hardness of the outlet water to be adjusted by reintroducing a portion of unsoftened water.

Completely softened water is not the objective on a distribution network. Mixing allows a residual hardness target to be set and controlled by TH test.

Double safety

The appliance is equipped with double safety, which limits the risk of salt container overflow.

Sizing

22 L of resin corresponds to an average household on water of typical hardness.

Two parameters determine the choice: the hardness of the inlet water in °fH and the number of people. An undersized appliance regenerates too often, consumes more salt and wears the resin faster.

Measuring the inlet TH before validating the volume is the only way to size correctly.

Installation

The appliance is installed on the main water inlet, after the meter, with the supplied bypass.

To be provided:

• a drain for regeneration discharge, with mandatory air gap: never direct and sealed connection to the sewer
• an electrical outlet nearby
• a salt container overflow connected
• access to the cover for salt filling

At commissioning, set the measured inlet hardness, then check the hardness obtained at the outlet after adjusting the mixing valve. Recheck after the first complete regeneration.

Maintenance

Maintain the salt level in the container, in pellet form. Periodically check for the absence of salt bridge, a crust that forms above the water level and prevents brine formation: the appliance then runs without softening.

Periodic resin cleaner extends exchange capacity, particularly on iron-bearing water.
