Carbon block cartridge Big Blue 20"

Treatment cartridge in activated carbon compacted into a block, in Big Blue 20" format. Aquapro reference PR-APC-2045.

Big Blue 20" is the large format of housing-based filtration: large diameter, long body, therefore a considerable media volume. It is the format for high-flow installations or whole-house treatment, where a 10" cartridge would be saturated within weeks.

Carbon block or loose carbon

The difference is structural and it governs performance.

In a GAC cartridge (granular carbon), the carbon sits loose inside a shell. Water flows freely through it and finds the easiest path. Over time it carves preferential channels: part of the flow crosses the bed with no real contact with the media. The granules can also settle and migrate.

In a carbon block cartridge, carbon powder is compacted and bonded into a solid block crossed by microchannels. No loose granules, no settling, no path of least resistance.

Water is forced through the material. Contact is uniform across the whole surface, from the first litre to the last.

Volume, the 20" argument

Activated carbon works by adsorption, and adsorption requires contact time. The longer water stays in contact with the media, the more complete the treatment.

That is exactly what the 20" format delivers: a markedly greater carbon volume than a 10". Two consequences.

Effective treatment even at high flow. Where a 10" cartridge sees its contact time collapse as soon as flow rises, the 20" keeps a margin, hence its relevance on a mains inlet or a multi-point installation.

Longer service life. More carbon means more adsorption capacity before saturation, therefore fewer service calls per year.

What the cartridge handles

The free chlorine in mains water. This is the critical point if an RO system is installed downstream: chlorine attacks polyamide TFC membranes chemically, and the damage is irreversible.

The tastes and odours, chlorine, earth, must, that make water unpleasant to drink despite being perfectly safe. In whole-house treatment, that covers every draw-off point in the installation, not just the kitchen tap.

The mechanical filtration provided by the block's compacted structure, which captures fine particles along the way.

Where to use it

As whole-house treatment on a mains inlet, protecting an RO system or a treatment train, on collective and professional installations, and anywhere the flow rules out a 10" format.

On sediment-loaded water, fit a prefilter upstream, 20 or 25 µm, then possibly 5 µm. A carbon block blinds mechanically if it absorbs the particulate load on its own, and then flow drops long before the carbon is saturated.

Replacement

Every 6 to 12 months depending on usage and water quality.

Activated carbon saturates: its adsorption surface fills up, and once full it captures nothing. A badly overdue cartridge can even release part of what it had captured.

Two replacement signals: the return of chlorine taste or odour, and a drop in flow. On a carbon block, the second often comes before the first.

Fitting

Shut off the water and depressurise before opening the housing. Follow the flow direction.

The bowl of a Big Blue 20" full of water is heavy: fit a properly secured wall bracket and allow enough clearance below the bowl to lower it.

On reassembly, grease the O-ring with food-grade silicone grease and check that it is clean and correctly seated, this is the first cause of leaks on a filter housing, and the stakes scale with bowl size.

After repressurising, flush for several minutes before use: any new carbon releases black fines at start-up.
