Total hardness test kit, 1 drop = 1 °f
Titration kit to measure the total hardness of mains water. Supplied with a 20 ml reagent bottle and its graduated dosing tube.
Each drop of reagent added corresponds to 1 French degree. The result is read by counting the drops, without calculation or equipment.

Use
Rinse the dosing tube, fill it with water up to the mark, add the reagent drop by drop whilst stirring between each drop, until the colour changes. The number of drops poured gives the total hardness directly in °f.
Count the drops as you go: losing count at the end of dosing is a common mistake.
Purpose of the measurement
- Size a water softener: the resin volume and valve setting depend on the inlet total hardness
- Adjust the mixing: check the total hardness obtained at the outlet after adjustment
- Monitor an installation: a rise in total hardness at the outlet indicates exhausted resin, a regeneration fault or insufficient salt
- Justify an intervention: a measurement before and after gives a figure to present to the customer
Good to know
Total hardness is measured in °f (French degrees) in Belgium and France. Do not confuse with German °dH: 1 °dH is approximately 1.79 °f.
Rinse the tube with clean water after each measurement: residual reagent will affect the next measurement.
Keep the bottle closed, away from light and frost.
