Pressure reducer 1/4", 70 PSI

Pressure limiter pre-set to 70 PSI, or 4.83 bar. It is installed on the 1/4" supply line of a reverse osmosis unit or filtration system to bring the mains pressure down to a value acceptable to the downstream equipment.

Aquapro reference PR-RD-70-14.

Function

On mains water supply, pressure can exceed 6 bar and vary according to time of day and location. Effects on a water treatment installation:

  • permanent stress on filter housing bodies and inline cartridges
  • strain on push-fit fittings and O-rings
  • water hammer transmitted to the membrane and tank
  • exceeding the maximum allowable pressure of the equipment, which voids the warranty

The reducer caps the outlet pressure at 4.83 bar, regardless of upstream pressure, within its operating range limits.

Choice of setting

The range comprises two values:

  • 40 PSI, 2.75 bar: low setting, for equipment with low maximum allowable pressure
  • 70 PSI, 4.83 bar: high setting, which cuts excess pressure whilst maintaining high service pressure

Two criteria determine the choice: the maximum allowable pressure of the downstream equipment, and the minimum pressure the membrane needs to operate correctly. Too low a setting on a reverse osmosis unit degrades the conversion rate and lengthens tank fill time.

On an installation where the equipment accepts 6 bar and the mains supply reaches 7 or 8 bar, the 70 PSI is the appropriate value: it provides protection without restricting output.

1/4" version

The 1/4" corresponds to the supply lines of domestic reverse osmosis units and under-sink filtration systems, which are the standard case. The 3/8" version (PR-RD-70-38) covers high-flow lines and professional installations.

Installation

Install on the supply line, upstream of the equipment to be protected, after the isolation valve. Observe the direction of flow indicated on the body: if mounted backwards, the reducer will not regulate.

Cut the tube straight with a tube cutter, insert until fully seated, check the lock by pulling on the tube. Pressurise gradually and check for leaks before closing the housing.

A downstream pressure gauge allows verification of the actual setting in service.

Limitations

The reducer is pre-set and not adjustable. It does not function as a check valve, isolation valve or filter. Upstream pressure below the setting passes through the equipment unmodified.
