Brine well tube Ø 4" - 80 cm
Grey tube, 4" diameter, 80 cm high, 2 mm wall thickness, supplied already slotted and drilled. Aquapro reference PR-PIPE-G-L.
It is the vertical column fitted inside the brine tank of a water softener, housing the brine valve and float assembly.
What a brine well does
It is an unassuming part, yet one of the reliability points of a softener.
The brine tank holds salt pellets and water. The mechanism governing the cycles, brine valve, float, safety overflow, has to work in that water, but not in the middle of the salt.
The well isolates that mechanism. Pellets stay outside the tube, the float rises and falls freely inside. Without it, salt jams the float, seizes the valve and throws off the regeneration cycles, a classic fault, and an invisible one: the unit appears to work while regenerating poorly.
The slot and the holes
The tube is supplied ready to use, which avoids rough workshop improvisation.
The holes let water and brine circulate freely between the tank and the inside of the well. This is what allows the level to equalise on both sides: the float therefore measures the actual level in the tank.
The slot at the base ensures flow at the bottom, where saturated brine is drawn during the cycle. A poorly cleared base means poor draw: the regeneration is short of salt and the resin is not fully regenerated.
The 2 mm wall gives the tube the rigidity to resist the pressure of the salt, which compacts and hardens through humidity cycles.
The 80 cm height
The well must match the height of the brine tank. 80 cm is a common tank height on domestic and small commercial softeners.
Check before ordering: too short a well ends up buried under the salt, too long a one protrudes and stops the lid closing. Measure the internal height of your tank.
Where to use it
As a replacement part on a softener whose well is cracked, deformed or missing. When building or refurbishing a brine tank. And on installations where the original well was removed, a frequent case, with the malfunctions that follow.
Fitting
Position the well vertically, slot facing down, against the tank wall or in its intended location.
Install the brine valve and float inside the tube, then fill the tank with salt around the well, never inside it.
Check that the well cap is in place at every refill: it is what stops pellets dropping into the tube, which would jam the float and bring back exactly the problem the well is there to prevent.
