How a polyphosphate works

This is the point many customers get wrong, and it needs to be clear: polyphosphate does not remove limescale from the water.

It works by sequestration. A very small dose of polyphosphate dissolves continuously into the water and attaches to calcium and magnesium ions. Coated in this way, those ions can no longer agglomerate into scale crystals: they stay in solution and pass through the installation without depositing.

The calcium is still there, the hardness (TH) is unchanged — but it no longer sticks.

Polyphosphate also forms a protective film on metal surfaces, which limits corrosion of pipework and heat exchangers.

Polyphosphate or softener: not the same thing

The distinction matters commercially, and it prevents misunderstandings after the sale.

A resin softener actually removes calcium and magnesium by ion exchange. Outlet hardness drops. It is a piece of equipment, with a brine tank, regenerations and maintenance.

A polyphosphate cartridge removes nothing: it prevents deposition. No salt, no regeneration, no drain, no electricity. In exchange, the water stays hard — you get neither the softness of softened water nor the savings on soap.

It is therefore the answer where the goal is to protect a piece of equipment, not to treat a whole house: where a softener would be disproportionate, impossible to install, or too demanding to run.

The clear body: the operational argument

This is what sets this version apart from an opaque one, and the benefit is direct.

Polyphosphates are consumed: they dissolve progressively into the water. The clear body lets you see the remaining level at a glance, without shutting off the water or opening the housing.

For an installer on a maintenance round, that changes the job: the check takes two seconds, and replacement is anticipated instead of discovered too late.

Trade-off: a clear body lets light through. Inside a closed cabinet, no issue; on a surface-mounted assembly in a lit room, choose an opaque version.

Where to use it

Protecting water heaters and storage cylinders, wall-mounted boilers, washing machines and dishwashers, coffee machines and any equipment where scale settles on an element or a heat exchanger.

It is on hot water circuits that limescale precipitates most, so that is where the treatment has the most value.

Limits to know

Polyphosphate loses its effectiveness above a certain temperature: in contact with very hot water it converts and stops sequestering. It therefore protects a cylinder or an element, but is not designed for high process temperatures.

Phosphate dosing in drinking water is also subject to regulation. The cartridge is designed to deliver a low, compliant dose, provided it is used within its intended scope and replaced on time.

Replacement

Replace as soon as the polyphosphate level is visibly low — that is the whole point of the clear body. An empty cartridge treats nothing, and the installation keeps running with nothing to flag it.

Consumption depends on flow rate and water hardness: the harder the water and the larger the volumes, the faster the charge is used up.

Fitting

Install upstream of the equipment being protected. Shut off the water and depressurise before opening the housing. Follow the flow direction.

On reassembly, grease the bowl O-ring with food-grade silicone grease and check that it is clean and correctly seated: this is the first cause of leaks on a filter housing.
