Activated carbon cartridge for AP-680

Replacement activated carbon cartridge for the Aquapro AP-680 filter. Reference PR-680-A.

It is the consumable part of the unit: the housing stays in place, only the cartridge is replaced.

What activated carbon does

Activated carbon works by adsorption: its microporous structure offers an enormous contact surface on which unwanted molecules attach.

It captures the free chlorine in mains water, along with the tastes and odours of chlorine, earth or must that make water unpleasant to drink despite being perfectly safe.

If the unit sits upstream of an RO membrane, this role becomes critical: chlorine attacks the polyamide TFC the membrane is made of chemically, and the damage is irreversible. A membrane costs far more than a carbon cartridge.

A proprietary format

The AP-680 is not a standard 10" or 9"3/4 format. It matches a specific housing, and only a cartridge in the correct format ensures the seal and the proper flow path.

A near-matching but non-conforming cartridge lets water bypass the media: the unit appears to work, water comes out normally, but it is no longer treated. That is the most insidious failure mode on a filter housing, because nothing flags it.

Its place in the chain

On a multi-stage installation, the carbon cartridge goes after mechanical filtration.

Without sediment prefiltration, carbon blinds mechanically long before exhausting its adsorption capacity: it stops treating while capacity remains. The sediment cartridge in the same format, PR-PPS-680, fills that role and directly extends the life of the carbon.

Replacement

Every 6 to 12 months depending on usage and water quality.

Activated carbon saturates: its adsorption surface fills up, and once full it captures nothing. A badly overdue cartridge can even release part of what it had captured.

The most reliable signal is the return of chlorine taste or odour. Do not wait for a drop in flow: on a carbon media, chemical saturation often comes before blinding.

Fitting

Shut off the water and depressurise before opening the housing. Follow the flow direction.

On reassembly, grease the bowl O-ring with food-grade silicone grease and check that it is clean, correctly seated in its groove and untwisted: this is the first cause of leaks on a filter housing.

After repressurising, flush for several minutes before use: any new carbon releases black fines at start-up. This is normal and harmless, provided it is flushed out.
