Principle

In the aquarium hobby, tap water contains chlorine, nitrates, phosphates, silicates and heavy metals that harm fish, corals and plants and encourage algae. This reverse-osmosis unit produces pure RO water, the ideal base to prepare precisely controlled freshwater or reef water. Compact and quiet, it clearly improves aquarium water quality.

How it works

Filtration is in three stages: a sediment pre-filter retains particles, an activated-carbon pre-filter removes chlorine, then the reverse-osmosis membrane rejects up to 96-98 % of dissolved salts. A flow restrictor optimises the pure-water/reject ratio; depending on the model, a booster pump increases yield where pressure is low. The pump-free Shut-Off version includes a restrictor that limits reject and stops production when draw-off ceases.

Impact on livestock

Result reliability rests on good instruments and good practice: a photometer gives a numeric reading far more precise than a by-eye colour comparison, provided valid reagents and clean glassware are used. Ecology & water saving

Reverse osmosis rejects some concentrated water: when properly set, the restrictor optimises this ratio to limit waste. The unpolluted reject water can even be reused (watering, cleaning). Choosing the right membrane flow and maintaining the pre-filters also means using less and extending the installation's life.

Choosing well

The choice depends on the tank type and volume. For RO water, membrane flow (in GPD, gallons per day) is sized to needs and water-change frequency; reef water requires more thorough osmosis than freshwater. Usage tips

For the RO unit, flush new cartridges at start-up, replace the carbon pre-filter before it saturates (it protects the membrane from chlorine) and check the conductivity of the produced water. For tests, follow the procedure, calibrate photometers with buffer solutions and store reagents cool and dark, respecting their expiry date. Regular measurements beat one-off checks.
